(x) Seven: Corporal S. W. Gray, South African Medical Corps

South Africa, Military Merit Medal, officially numbered '392'; Long Service & Good Conduct, the rim officially numbered '169'; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star, copy clasp, 8th Army; War and Africa Service Medals, these last four all officially impressed '188056'; Efficiency Medal, G.VI.R., Union of South Africa (Cpl. S. W. Gray. S.A.M.C.), good very fine (7)

Stephen Wentworth Gray was born on 28 June 1911 at Umtali, Southern Rhodesia and was a gents hairdresser living at East London before joining the South African Medical Corps on 22 May 1940. He was taken a Prisoner of War whilst serving with the 14th Field Ambulance in June 1942 and confirmed in this status in November 1942. He was held captive in North Africa and Italy and was released in April 1943. Gray thence served at 27 Air School and with his unit at East London from November 1943-September 1945, being posted near to his home after his wife suffered a nervous breakdown whilst he was 'behind the wire'; sold together with copied service records which confirm the first two awards and their numbers being correct.
