Six: Private G. Smith, Queen's Regiment, late Bedfordshire and Herefordshire Regiments and Staffordshire Regiment

George Smith was born in 1909 and worked as an Electrician before enlisting at Hounslow on 20 October 1930 with the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Posted to India on 4 March 1932 he remained there until 17 May 1938. Transferred to the 1st Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment on 12 September 1938 Smith was again posted this time to Palestine where he served for several months before returning to the 1st Battalion of his former Regiment on 5 March 1939.

Transferred to Egypt on 16 December 1940 Smith served between there and Sudan for the next two years. Joining the 1st Battalion in there move to India on 1 March 1942 Smith did not remain there, likely transferring to a separate Battalion he was returned to Britain on 19 August 1942. Entering the North West European theatre on 30 July 1944 during Operation Overlord Smith served here for the rest of the war during the push towards Germany.

Transferred to the Queen's Regiment on 5 August 1944 Smith was to see through the rest of the war with this unit. Transferred into the reserves on 27 September 1953 the final assessment of his character states that he was 'Hardworking & military man, honest, sober & reliable.' He went on to serve with the Territorial Army as part of the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers until 8 January 1956 when he was finally discharged; sold together with copied medal rolls as well as an archive of original documentation comprising:

War Department Driving Permit.

Driving Licence.

A photograph of the recipient in uniform.
