A collection of maps and documents relating to Ordnance Worker J. Petrie, Royal Ordnance Factory, Swynnerton, who saw service from 1942-45, filling shells for the war effort

Comprising: Maps and photographs of the Swynnerton Ordnance Factory; Two Rule books including 'rules of the Danger Area'; A collection of passes, coupons and Christmas cards relating to Frobisher Hall hostel; Two Frobisher Hall dinner menus; three play bills for Frobisher Hall dramatics; a photograph of the recipient during a dramatic production; A record song book; A collection of postcards to the recipient from a colleague written whilst a P.O.W., very fine (Lot)

Arthur George Frederick Petrie was born at Aberdeen on 15 May 1914, the son of a Boer War Veteran and serving member of the Royal Army Medical Corps (for the medals of his father see lot xxx). He worked as a Stone Mason and Bricklayer prior to enlisting at Aberdeen on 18 October 1939 with the Royal Engineers (Regimental Number 1894112). Posted to 121 Road Construction Company, Royal Engineers Petrie saw service with them in Palestine, with possible further service in the Vichy French controlled mandates of Syria and Iraq.

As the war progressed all eyes turned to North Africa and- still with this unit- Petrie was posted there, to the Eighth Army, the eponymous 'Desert Rats'. Writing a letter from here to his sister on 2 March 1942 from '121 R.D. Const. Coy RE. M.E.F.'. Petrie was posted to Italy prior to the end of the war, undergoing his pre-demobilisation medical here, however he did not meet the qualifications for the Italy Star. Posted to the Army reserve on 13 March 1946.

Army Pass for the Royal Engineers Depot in Chatham, along with a Record of Service slip and Transfer to the Army Reserve forms.

John Petrie served as a Warrant Officer with the Royal Engineers, in Britain from 1935-45; sold together with handwritten research.

Jessie Petrie was born Jessie Ross, the daughter of Master Donald Ross, Merchant Navy (for his medals see lot: xxx). During the war she was one of the women who took up tools to replace the factory workers who had marched to war. Petrie worked at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Swynnerton starting there in 1942.

While here she lived at various hostiles constructed for the workers and named after Royal Naval Officers including Frobisher Hall and Duncan Hall. Much of her spare time was devoted to amateur dramatics in the Halls and Petrie was to take part in several plays there including Sleeping Beauty and Dick Whittington. She was later to marry Sapper A. G. F. Petrie, Royal Engineers, for the medals of their son, please see Lot xxx.
