Alfred John Kemp was born at Penzance, Cornwall on 29 September 1892, the son of Thomasine Kemp. Enlisting for service as a Corporal on 18 April 1917 he was attached to Headquarters Staff on 26 July 1917. Promoted Sergeant-Major he was posted to Lieutenant-Colonel G.M.P. Hawthorn's column on 29 July 1918 in Rhodesia-Nyasaland. Promoted Staff Sergeant-Major on 1 October 1918 he performed detached duty at Chindi from 27 December 1918. Kemp was invalided from service from No. 4 General Hospital at Robert's Heights as a result of Chronic Malaria on 24 June 1919. He went on to serve in the Kenyan Civil Service before returning to Britain. After the Second World War he was awarded the Defence medal with the box of issue addressed to 'Mr. A. J. Kemp, The Malt House, Chywoone Hill, Newlyn, Penzance, Cornwall'. Kemp died in May 1986 at Penzance; sold together with copied service papers and census data.
