Charles Jackson was born on 17 January 1891, enlisting with the Army Reserve on 10 December 1915 he was posted to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 16 June 1917. Joining the 2nd Reserve Battalion, Royal Naval Division that same month on 16 June Jackson was posted to Howe Battalion in France on 26 November. Twice hospitalised with the 149th (Royal Naval) Field Ambulance as a result of a Hernia he was later transferred to the Hood Battalion. Howe was demobilised on 8 February 1919.
