Robert Leslie Maguire was born at Patrington, Yorkshire on 12 January 1903 and was a Greenwich schoolboy upon joining the Royal Navy in June 1913. He had the sole entitlement to the British War Medal for the Great War. With the outbreak of the Second World War he returned to the fold and served aboard Shropshire from 27 May 1941, with a duplicate British War Medal authorised on 30 May 1941. Maguire earned a 'mention' by War's end (London Gazette 13 February 1945, refers) and had his Gratuity paid from Badger.
