Pair: Lieutenant and Quartermaster A. E. Smith, Royal Naval Reserve, late Royal Marine Light Infantry, who enlisted as a Private in 1888 and served until 1909, joining the Fleet Reserve as a Petty Officer Armourer and being commissioned as a Lieutenant (Assistant Paymaster) during the Great War

Arthur Eden Smith was born at Kingston, Jamaica on 8 May 1869 and enlisted with the Royal Marine Light Infantry in London on 8 May 1888. Posted to the Portsmouth Division on 6 December 1888, before embarking upon his first naval command H.M.S. Canada. Appointed Corporal aboard this vessel on 28 April 1900, returning ashore in December of that year he was again advanced, this time to Sergeant on 10 August 1893.

Smith remained ashore with Portsmouth Division for some time, not returning to sea until a posting aboard H.M.S. Vulcan (via Rainbow) on 29 August 1898. Not returning ashore until 4 January 1902 Smith was promoted Gunnery Sergeant on 3 July 1903 and posted to HMY Osborne, at that time the Royal Yacht.

Posted back ashore on 1 September 1906 as Barrack Sergeant he remained in this roll until 8 May 1909 when he was transferred to the reserve with the rank of Petty Officer Armourer. Commissioned Lieutenant & Quartermaster as Assistant Paymaster on 26 June 1918 with the Royal Marine Light Infantry Smith remained in that roll until 10 May 1909; sold together with copied service record.
