James Addison Kay was born at Houghton-Le-Spring, Durham in 1896. Working as a Pit Pony Boy he attested for the 1/1st Scottish Horse and was still with them when they are the 1/2nd Scottish Horse re-equipped as infantry prior to the Gallipoli landings. Entering the war at Gallipoli on 2 September 1915 Kay was present there for almost two months before joining the evacuation to Egypt on 28 December 1915.

The 1/1 Scottish Horse and 1/2 Battalion Scottish Horse joined together in Egypt to form the 13th Battalion, Black Watch on 1 October 1916. Posted to Salonika on 21 October 1916 Kay served there until 24 June 1918 when he was transferred to France. Notably he also appears upon the roll of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps with the number TT/04100. Kay survived the war and went on to marry Florence Miles of Durham, England. He lived until 4 October 1963 when he died at Sedgefield, Durham; sold together with copied census data.
