George Cruickshanks was born at Deskford and enlisted at Cullen. Having served in France and on Gallipoli, he was killed in action on the 21 March 1918, whilst serving with the 6th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). Cruickshanks is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He was the son of Jane Cruickshank of Berryhillock Mills, Deskford, Cullen, Banffshire, and the late Robert Cruickshank.

He has two MICs, the first as a Sergeant (No. 5177) with the Royal Highlanders earning just a 1914-15 Star where he serves in France from the 18 August 1915 and notes his death. The second shows him being entitled to the Pair, the Regiments mentioned are the 2nd Scottish Horse (No. 2051), Royal Highlanders (No. 5177 & 267205).
