James Swinscoe was born at Nottingham on 21 March 1891 and worked as a miner prior to enlisting with the Royal Navy as a Stoker Class I on 8 February 1915. His first posting afloat was H.M.S. Seal on 20 September 1915, part of the 7th Destroyer Flotilla at that time. Returning ashore on 22 March 1917 he was soon posted again, this time to H.M.S. Tedworth a Hunt-class minesweeper. With this unit he served with the 3rd Fast Sweeping Flotilla, serving out of Edinburgh to the North Sea. Swinscoe was demobilised ashore on 10 March 1919; sold together with copied research including service papers and a medal roll.
