Samuel Dorey was born at West Lulworth, Dorset on 17 January 1877 and enlisted with the Royal Navy on 13 February 1896 at Victory II. During his time with the Royal Navy he served with a number of vessels including Charybdis, Andromeda and Apollo, later sent to the Royal Naval Reserve on 13 February 1908.

Re-enrolled on 15 February 1912 Dorey saw service with H.M.S. Glory from August 1914. Later posted to the cruiser Hermione in May 1916 and later Achilles in August 1918. He was demobilised on 12 February 1919 and went on to join the Merchant Marine Reserve.
