Three: Leading Seaman A. J. Edwards, Royal Navy, who was 'mentioned' for his services against enemy Submarines

1914-15 Star (J.32247, A. J. Edwards. Boy. 1., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oakleaves (J.32247 A. J. Edwards. A.B. R.N.), mounted as worn, good very fine (3)

Albert John Edwards was born at Lydd, Kent on 20 February 1898 and was a farm labourer upon his joining the Royal Navy on 17 July 1913. During the Great War he served aboard various vessels including Moresby from 18 January 1918-14 May 1920, in which period he was 'mentioned' for his services against enemy submarines (London Gazette 14 September 1918, refer). This was probably earned for the actio on 15 March 1918, when she was patrolling with sistership Michael when they surprised the U-110. Shortly after the submarine had sunk the ocean liner Amazon, it dived but was brought back to the surface when the destroyers attacked with depth charges and was finished by gunfire. Edwards was invalided from the service in September 1925.
