Alexander McIntosh Rankin was born at Glasgow on 26 January 1894 and worked as an Apprentice Fitter prior to enlisting with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Promoted Leading Seaman in December 1914 Ranking served with Collingwood Battalion, Royal Naval Division from June 1915. Further advanced Chief Petty Officer in March 1916 he was later posted to the Howe Battalion. Serving with H.M.S. Hermione from 16 March 1917, he was discharged on 19 February 1919.
