[D.S.M.] London Gazette 24 April 1918:

‘The following awards have been approved for operations on the Belgian Coast’.

Alexander Greenway was born at Dudley, Worcestershire on 30 August 1879 and was a labourer upon his enlistment on 2 January 1899. Having served off the coast of Somaliland and in the Persian Gulf, Greenway served aboard Lawford from 15 April 1914-4 August 1916. Lawford was a Laforey Class Destroyer launched in 1913 and at the outbreak of the War served with the Third Destroyer Flotilla supporting the First Fleet. She took part in the Battle off Noordhinder Bank on 1 May 1915, assisting in the sinking of two German coastal destroyers. Having assisted in the evacuation from Cape Helles at the end of the Gallipoli Campaign on 8–9 January 1916, by April 1916 she transferred to Ninth Destroyer Flotilla. With that unit, she played a belated role in the Battle of Jutland when she was one of eight Harwich destroyers which screened the torpedoed battleship Marlborough on 1 June 1916.

Transferred to Melpomene, with whom he served aboard from 23 January 1917-2 April 1919. She was built for the Greek Navy, originally to be named Samos, but was purchased from the Greeks in August 1914. It was whilst in her service that he earned his D.S.M., eventually being shore pensioned on 3 March 1921, having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. on 26 February 1914.

His D.S.M. is known to the market and was last sold in 2010.
