2nd Lieutenant P. D. Earle, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, unique to that Regiment, the only officer from that Battalion not to receive a clasp on the Khedive's Sudan medal, Earle commanded a detachment of 24 men who were entitled to the medal with no clasp

P. D. Earle served with 'C' Company, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment South of Wadi Halfa. He commanded a detachment of 24 men here from 8 May-2 September 1898. The History of the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment refers to the journey from Wadi Halfa to Abu Hamed as being the worst undertaken by the Regiment during the Campaign. One account even states that 'Sergeant Haines of the Lincolns cut his throat from ear to ear'. Notably 2nd Lieutenant Earle is mentioned in the Omdurman Diaries by John Meredith; sold together with copied medal rolls, an index card noting pertinent details and an extract from The History of the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment.
