Pair: Major and Paymaster G. W. Smith, 67th Regiment, late 1st West Indies Regiment (Army Pay Department), who commanded a detachment of the 67th Regiment at the defence of Sherpur

G. W. Smith served as paymaster to the 1st West Indies Regiment during the Third Ashantee War. Later serving with the 67th Regiment as Captain and Paymaster he had charge of the Field Treasure Chest at Kuram Valley between April-May 1879. Present with the Regiment during both halves of the campaign Smith was to fight at Charasia and later the defence of Kabul. During this extended engagement where the British garrison faced a vast Afghan army he was given charge of a detached post. Surviving the war Smith is noted in the 1883 edition of Hart's Army List with the rank of Major; sold together with a copied extract from Hart's Army List.
