Naval General Service Medal 1915-62, 1 clasp, Persian Gulf 1909-14 (J.655. E. H. Bean, Tel. H.M.S. Sphinx), pitting, edge bruising, nearly very fine

Edger Harlow Bean was born at Hoo, Kent on 26 May 1892 and attested for the Royal Navy as a Boy Class II on 7 February 1908. Specialising as a Boy Telegraphist 2 October he received his first posting aboard ship on 13 September 1910 with H.M.S. Achteon. Reaching his majority aboard this ship Bean was promoted Ordinary Seaman (Telegraphist) on 26 May 1910. Returning to the ship after a spell ashore he was promoted Telegraphist.

Posted to H.M.S. Sphinx on 6 March 1912 Bean served aboard for the next two years. At this time she was serving in the Persian Gulf, attempting to combat piracy and smuggling in the region. Notably she destroyed a tower in the town of Mayalu in April 1912 as a reprisal for the one of the Highflyer's boats having been fired upon.

Promoted Leading Seaman on 1 April 1914 by the opening of the Great War Bean was stationed aboard H.M.S. Sirius. Posted to the light-cruiser Undaunted on 29 August he was to see out the war with her. Undaunted had an eventful early war, seeing action at Heligoland Bight and later in the Action of Texel. In December 1914 she was also in action as part of the Cuxhaven Raid, screening ships carrying floatplanes to raid German Naval Bases. In early 1915 she was part of the Battle of Dogger Bank and on 24 March 1916 was damaged in a collision with another British ship while covering a German Naval Bases thought to house submarines.

Bean was promoted Petty Officer Telegrapher on 1 October 1916 and remained with Undaunted until 26 July 1918. He saw some post-war service aboard a variety of vessels being discharged ashore on 25 May 1922; sold together with a copied medal roll.
