Thomas Garghan was born at Widnes, Lancashire in 1893, the son of James and Anne Garghan, working as a labourer in a chemical plant prior to enlistment. Attesting- along with his brother William for the Worcestershire Regiment Garghan entered the war in France on 12 August 1914.

He served with them for some time, doubtless seeing heavy action with the rest of the Regiment at Mons and Le Cataeu. The next year saw the death of his brother Private William Garghan in Egypt. Despite seeing such heavy fighting in the early years of the War he survived and was discharged on 7 March 1917, later seeing Territorial service with the number 5099206 with the Warwickshire Regiment.
