British War Medal 1914-20 (SS.1546 W. E. Browse. A.B. R.N.), good very fine

William Elson Browse was born at Gravesend, Kent on 4 September 1887 and worked as a Butcher prior to enlistment. Enlisting on 11 July 1906 he served aboard several vessels including Aboukir, Royal Arthur and Irresistible. Transferring to the Royal Fleet Reserve on 11 July 1911 he was mobilised for service on 2 August 1914.

Posted to H.M.S. Cochrane on 25 August 1914 he served with her for the bulk of the war including the Battle of Jutland. Sent to Murmansk in March 1918 Cochrane became part of the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War. Browse left the ship on 20 November 1918 and was demobilised on 6 June 1921; sold together with a copied service record.
