Robert Edwards was born at Bala, Merionethshire on 4 August 1899 and was a motor cleaner and conductor on the Great Western Railway upon his joining the Royal Navy on 2 October 1917. He served aboard Inflexible from 3 February 1918-20 July 1919. On 21 November 1918 she was present at Scapa Flow for the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet.
