India General Service 1908-35, 1 clasp, Waziristan 1919-21 (333150. A.C.1. W. C. Pettifer. R.A.F.), suspension loose, very fine
William Charles Pettifer was born at Bermondsey, London on 1 May 1897 and worked as a Lithographer prior to enlisting with the 7th Battalion, London Regiment on 7 August 1914 with the number 1995. Joining the war in France on 17 March 1915 he served until 28 January 1919 by which time he was with the 33rd Battalion, London Regiment with the number 875006.
Re-enlisting at R.A.F. Henlow on 9 August 1919 as an Aircraftman II, he was sent to Halton on 14 August and posted to No. 31 Squadron on 4 October. Serving with this unit during the campaign to quiet the unrest on the North-West Frontier in the wake of the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The R.A.F. contribution provided extremely valuable with their bombing of rebel villages and forts forcing the tribes to the negotiating table. Pettifer was promoted during this campaign on 1 February 1921 to the rank of Aircraftman Class I.
Interestingly he is listed as having been posted from No. 31 Squadron to Kabul on 21 April 1922 only to be posted back on 25 April. Returning to Britain in 1923 he continued to service until 11 July 1923, Pettifer was posted to the Royal Air Force Reserve on 8 August 1923 and was discharged on 8 August 1931; sold together with typed research and a copied service record.
