Canada General Service 1866-70, 1 clasp, Fenian Raid 1870 (1087 Sgt. W. Cooper. 69/S. Lin. R.), good very fine

One of 146 other ranks to receive this medal.

Henry Johns served with the alias of William Cooper of Alverstoke, Hampshire who was born in 1846, the son of David Johns of 15 West Hill, Dartford, Kent. Enlisting on 26 August 1864 with the name of William Cooper he was posted to Canada on 19 August 1867. Appointed Corporal on 15 August 1868 and promoted Sergeant on 19 August 1869 there is some dispute as to whether he was present at the Battle of Trout River on 27 May 1870. The names of 'William Cooper' and 'Henry Johns' are both on the roll with the service number of 1057, Cooper is listed as being at Trout River while Johns is not. Notably there is neither a 'William Cooper' or 'Henry Johns' with the service number 1087.

Johns was charged with neglect of orders and reduced to Private on 2 September 1870, being posted to Bermuda on 15 November 1870. Transferred to Gibraltar on 19 April 1873 he was he was again charged, this time with 'disgraceful conduct' which resulted in a short imprisonment and the loss of his good conduct pay. Returning to Britain on 4 December 1878 the rest of his service was spent here, transferring to the Welsh Regiment on 1 July 1881. Johns was discharged while at Cardiff on 8 September 1885; sold together with a copy of the Canada General Service Medal Roll 1866-1870, typed research and copied service papers.
