Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (P, Lyons, 1st Batn 10th Regt.), edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine
Peter Lyons was born at Armagh, County Mayo, Ireland in 1830 and attested on 24 May 1861. Serving with the 2st Battalion, 10th Regiment of Foot under the command of General Franks he was part of the push to relieve Lucknow. Sergeant Malcom of the 10th Regiment relates that Frank's force was engaged at Chanda, Umerapore, Sultanpore, and Darowdha in a series of skirmishes against rebel forces estimated at fifteen thousand men. The same source notes that a number of men from the 10th Regiment were used as mounted infantry as the column was desperately short of cavalry.
The push was successful and they managed to force their way into the city and rescue the garrison. Lyons continued to serve until 1861 when he was discharged having served for seven years and nine months in India. He was allowed to re-attest with the 64th Regiment of Foot that same year on 24 May. He was finally discharged on 22 March 1870 at Parkhurst; sold together with copied research including medal rolls, discharge papers and an extract from a Battalion History relating to Lucknow.
