The Chalon Issues
1864-71 Watermark Large Star, Perforated 12½ at Auckland
1868 (11 Sept.) envelope from Shortland to the Daily Southern Cross in Auckland bearing 2d. blue tied by barred oval obliteration, 'shortland/ se 11/ 68' c.d.s alongside, Auckland dispatch arrival on reverse; fine and a significant survivor from the northern goldfields, which are hard to trace in postal history.

Note: the envelope evidently travelled by the paddle steamer 'Royal Alfred' which sailed for Auckland on the afternoon of the 11th and carried information about goldmining developments at Thames which the Daily Southern Cross published on Monday 14th. The Shortland P.O. was only open for two and a half years
