Kiaochow
1914 Field postcard from Tsingtau addressed to Peitaiho and redirected to Tientsin, franked with 1905/19 Kiautschou 4c. carmine red, cancelled by "Tsingtau" c.d.s for "21.8.14", alongside scarce Chinese bilingual "Pehtaiho" and arrival Tientsin bilingual c.d.s. for "25 Aug 14". On 15th August 1914 Japan delivered an ultimatum to Germany demanding that it relinquish its control of the disputed territory of Kiaoutschou. Upon rejection of the ultimatum, Japan declared war on 23rd August and the same day its navy bombarded the German territory. With this uncertainty the card was franked at the international rate of 4 cents rather at the discounted German Post internal rate to ensure a higher chance to be delivered. A piece of huge historical value being the only known such piece from the beginning of the War.
