The Onchan camp consisted of 60 buildings and was opened in June 1940. The camp initially held interned Germans and Austrians, then after September 1940 exclusively Italians.
The coins were struck by Messr J. R. Gaunt & Son Ltd, Birmingham. A total of 2,500 Sixpence pieces were struck, alongside 20,000 Pennies and 2,000 Halfpennies.
