Auction: 22107 - Spink Numismatic e-Circular 17: Part I - A Gentleman's Collection of Crowns, Halfcrowns and Florins - e-Auction
Lot: 1008

William III (1694-1702), Chester Shilling, 1697, variety of third laureate, cuirassed and draped bust right, C below, rev. four crowned shields cruciform, six strings to harp, six billets, milled edge, 5.82g, 6h (Bull (?) 1178-R3; ESC 1110; S.3513), fine, rare

There seems to be some confusion in the Bristol and Chester section in Bull. His number 1170 describes a coin 1696 no stops on obverse, but the ESC and Spink references are for a coin dated 1697 no stops on reverse. His numbers 1168 and 1172 describe identical coins. His numbers 1173 and 1178 also describe identical coins, but while the ESC and Spink references for the second are for a Chester coin, for the first they are for a Bristol coin. This Bristol coin has already been listed, under Bristol, as 1164. This had led to further confusion of the rarities. The Bristol coin 1164 has been given R3 which is the Chester rarity. The two identical Chester coins have R, which is the Bristol rarity, and R3, which is the Chester rarity. Specialists in this series will know what they are doing. Everyone else should proceed with caution.
