Auction: 22105 - Spink Numismatic e-Circular 20 - The Wootton Collection of English Silver Coins - e-Auction
Lot: 2601
Victoria (1837-1901), Contemporary Forgery Halfcrown 1866, young head left, rev. crowned square -topped shield, in wreath, milled edge, 12.95g, 6h, a fabled 'impossible date' in the Halfcrown series, typically worn with flattened surfaces, scarcely good but a popular 19th Century curio
It was previously believed by the Royal Mint that this date, as well as 1868 and 1871 were genuine strikings. However, more recent opinion is that these issues are in fact later forgeries, most likely struck around 1868 and 1871. It is thought that worn dies were used to create the appearance that the coins had been well circulated. However, it has been noted that the head types for this period are incorrect.
