Auction: 22105 - Spink Numismatic e-Circular 20 - The Wootton Collection of English Silver Coins - e-Auction
Lot: 2540
George II (1727-1760), LIMA Halfcrown, 1745 (over 3?) DECIMO NONO, old laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left, LIMA below, rev. crowned shields cruciform, nine strings to harp, nine strings to harp, lettered edge upwards, 15.01g, 6h (Bull 1687; ESC 605; Spink 3695), lightly wiped but lustrous with golden peripheral toning, good very fine
Bull (1687a) notes the article in SNC 1993 pp.156-7 in which the overdate is discussed (2 specimens recorded by M. Faintich), and he gives this 5 over 3 variety R6. The date on this coin closely matches the illustration in the SNC article, which prompts us to cautiously (!) give this as a possible 5 over 3. It is considered rare now, but as it is not immediately apparent as an overdate it is possible many more remain unnoticed and unrecorded.
It is also worth noting that Bull gives eight strings for both the normal date and for the overate. A glance down CoinArchives shows several with nine.
