John Gregory Morgan was born at Eglwysilan, Glamorgan in 1889 the son of William and Sarah Morgan of Millbrook Road Dinas Powis, Glamorgan. Prior to enlisting he worked in his family's butcher shop in Caerphilly, alongside his grandmother. Joining at Caerphilly (possibly the victim of conscription laws) with 2nd/7th Battalion Morgan trained with them as part of 66th Division, the last unit in the Territorial Force to be sent overseas.
The 2nd/7th Battalion landed in France in February 1917 and was swiftly thrown into action at the Battle of Passchendaele. They were in the trenches north of Passchendaele between 15-19 November during which time they faced heavy shelling. Morgan was killed on 17 November 1917 and is remembered upon the Tyne Cot Memorial; sold together with the recipient's original slip of issue for the British War and Victory Medals as well as copied Commonwealth War Graves details, War Diary and biographical information.
