John Samuel Hughes was born at Pontypridd, Glamorgan on 3 November 1890. Working as a Collier on the outbreak of war Hughes enlisted with the Army Service Corps as a Driver at Cardiff on 9 December 1914. Serving with 30th Field Ambulance while in Britain he entered the war on 4 December 1915. Here he served until discharged to the 'Z' Class reserve on 27 January 1919. Returning to the mines by 1921 he was serving a Colliery Labourer at with the Great Western Colliery Co., Timawr, Pontypridd. Later recorded on the 1939 census as a Motor Driver but still living at Pontypridd, this time 10 Queen Street. Hughes died on 7 February 1953 at Pontypridd; sold together with a Special Constable, Glamorgan Badge, original photographs of the recipients home and the Welsh Division Memorial as well as copied research including service records, M.I.C. and discharge card.
