Leslie Warner Timmis was born at Seaforth, Liverpool on 21 May 1892, the son of Henry and Annie Timmis of 8 Cambridge Road, Crosby, Lancashire. Employed prior to the Great War as a motor mechanic and driver at Myeiscough & Dunsmore of 25 Liverpool Road, Great Crosby. He enlisted on 1 September 1914 at Liverpool with the Liverpool Regiment. Posted to the 17th (1st City) Battalion that same day he entered the war on 7 November 1915. Remaining there until 26 May 1916 he returned to Britain having been posted to the Regimental Depot, Timmis remained here until being posted to the Officer Cadet Battalion, Royal Flying Corps on 29 December 1916.
Promoted 2nd Lieutenant on 3 May 1917 he began to fly with No. 3 Squadron. Timmis was flying low over Bourlon Wood near Albert on 30 November 1917 when he was hit by machine gun fire from the ground. His engine was hit and he was forced to ditch, taken prisoner by the enemy and taken first to a prisoner of war camp at Le Cateau. Later he was moved again and it was not until 14 December 1918 that Timmis found himself back in Britain having been repatriated at the end of hostilities. Continuing to serve for some time after the war he was finally dispersed on 11 December 1919; sold together with copied attestation and service records as well as a two R.F.C. cap badges and two buttons along with an R.F.C. shoulder patch, riband bars and an Academie Des Coiffeurs de France medal.
