Richard Grosvenor Nicholson Freeborn was born at Manchester, London on 22 August 1894, the son of Norman and Luara Freeborn of Ivy Lane, Flixton, Lancashire. Commissioned into the Reserve of Officers on 13 March 1915 he was posted to the Lancashire Fusiliers, entering the war at Gallipoli in August 1915. Promoted Lieutenant on 1 July 1917 he later transferred to the Labour Corps, being advanced Captain on 14 September 1917 while commanding a Company. Relinquishing this role on 9 April 1919 he also returned to the rank of Lieutenant. Freeborn died at The Infirmary, Stockport on 1 July 1961.
