George Hewitt, a native of Sheffield, Yorkshire, joined the Royal Artillery on 24 September 1908. During the Great War he served in France with the 13th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery from 14 October 1914-24 December 1915, thence transferring to India. Remaining there, Hewitt joined the Indian Army Ordnance Corps and was made Conductor in 1936 (Gazette of India No. 128 of February 1936, refers). He was declared unfit for further service in November 1937.
