G. Clears served with the 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry on the North West Frontier in 1935, after this he was posted to the Army Reserve on 7 January 1937. Mobilised again on the outbreak of the Second World War ,Clears served with the 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, being wounded in the summer of 1944. Whilst the date is not recorded on the Casualty List of eight men of his Battalion, one of those was wounded on 26 July 1944.
