Henry Coates was born at St. Luke's, Gloucester in 1862, the son of Hannah Coates of 40 Southgate Street, Gloucester. Enlisting with the Rifle Brigade on 4 November 1881 he was posted to East India the next year on 14 March 1882. Remaining here for over four years he was posted to Upper Burma on 3 October 1886, while here he- like so many British soldiers- caught dysentery but managed to survive the illness and remained in the county until 31 March 1888. Returning to India Coates remained there until 29 March 1889 when he returned to Britain. Transferred to the Army Reserve on 3 November 1893.
Despite completing his service Coates re-joined the Army upon the outbreak of the Second Boer War. Enlisting with the 6th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 5 January 1900. Promoted Sergeant in less than a week on 11 January and served in that rank for the next four years until he was disembodied on4 January 1904. Immigrating to Australia he returned to the colours one final time on the outbreak of the Great War. Enlisting at Broadmeadows, Victoria he served with 21st Battalion, Australian Imperial Force again as a Sergeant.
