'We were holding a section of an entrenched position on the 2nd, and your son's Company, "D," was on the right our line.... and the Germans (took) an opportunity to make a very strong attack upon our right. So well were our men kept in hand by your son and the late Captain Gerrard (killed the same day) that they hung on for several hours unsupported, and even after both officers were hit they fought splendidly. The result was the German attack failed, and there is no doubt that this was due to the splendid example set by your son. He was directing the fire of his men when he was hit in the neck by a bullet.'
