Albert James Aupiais was born at Towns River, Cape Colony on 6 November 1892. He served with the South African Engineer Corps in German South West Africa as a Motor Driver before transferring to the South African Aviation Corps. At the end of the German South West African Campaign the S.A.A.C. was amalgamated into the Royal Flying Corps as 26th (South African) Squadron. Formed at Netheravon on 8 October 1915 they were sent to German East Africa in December 1915, arriving in Mombasa on 31 January 1916. It was later disbanded at Blandford on 8 July 1918; sold together with typed research.
