British War Medal 1914-20 (2. Lieut. A. W. Gillender.), good very fine
Alfred Williamson Gillender was born in 1890 to the Reverend Robert and Mrs. Mary Gillender. An assistant schoolteacher in 1911, by the time of the Great War he was serving as a Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Commissioned into the 3rd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment in 1916 (London Gazette, 1 January 1916, refers), whilst attached to the 7th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment he died in France, of wounds received in action, on 10 April 1917. Gillender is buried at St. Nicholas British Cemetery in France.
