The British War Medal awarded to Air Mechanic Class I, J. W. Young, Royal Naval Air Service, who was washed away and drowned when Airship SS-18 crashed into a cow

James William Young was born at Lille, France in 19 September 1892 the son of William and Emilie Smith of 31 Bis, Rue de la Barre, Lille. Engaged on 21 July 1915 as a fitter he served at President II, the Air Station at Anglesey. Young became an Airship Engineer and on 23 October 1916 was serving aboard the Submarine Scout Airship SS-18 when it attempted to land near the Irish Sea. During the landing the Airship struck a cow and the resulting damage caused it to drift over the Irish Sea, at this stage Young was swept overboard and drowned with the other two crewmen being rescued. Young's body was not recovered and he is commemorated upon the Chatham Naval Memorial; sold together with copied service records, extracts from Airmen Died in the Great War 1914-1918 and The 'Sea Scouts' as well as handwritten research and Commonwealth War Graves details.
