John Lindsay Smith was born at Calcutta, Bengal on 19 April 1874, the son of Mary and Major General John Smith of the Bengal Staff Corps. The children took on the historical name of Lindsay with their family name of Smith. Commissioned into the Indian Staff Corps on 16 January 1895 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant he was promoted Lieutenant on 4 October 1897. Transferring to the 4th Lancers he was further advanced Captain on 16 January 1904 and Major on 16 January 1913. Later promoted Lieutenant Colonel he died on 29 December 1944 at Newton Abbot, Devon, not long after the death of his son of the same name who was killed during the storming of Monte Cassino; sold together with copied London Gazette extracts.
