(x) India General Service 1895-1908, 1 clasp, Relief of Chitral 1895 (3743 Pte. J. Murray 1st Bn. E. Lanc: Regt.), pawnbrokers mark after unit, minor contact marks, very fine
John Murray was born at Preston, Lancashire in 1869, the son of John and Bridget Murray. Enlisting at Mullingar on 19 February 1892 with the East Lancashire Regiment, his attestation notes previous service with 2nd Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Murray served as a Private, being imprisoned with Hard Labour for 21 days at Dublin on 19 January 1893 but being spared 12 days on 28 January as 'unfit for Hard Labour'. Posted that same day to Gibraltar he served in the Garrison there until 25 February 1895 before being further posted to India. While stationed here he took part in the expedition to relieve Chitral, and the year after he was discharged as a result of deafness (9 June 1896); the same day boarding the Clive to return home.
Sold together with copied medal rolls, service records and a typed transcription.
