Christie's, November 1982.

Two men of this name upon the rolls, the other a Sergeant in the Royal Marines aboard the Dreadnought at Trafalgar.

Thomas Vernon served as Quarter Gunner aboard H.M.S. Berwick during the Siege of Gaieta when an Austrian army captured the Italian city from followers of Murat at the tail end of the Hundred Days campaign. Two Royal Navy vessels assisted in the Siege, the Berwick and the Malta with a total of 89 clasps awarded: 20 to officers and the rest to enlisted men. The role of a Quarter Gunner was to assist the Gunner in overseeing the ship's guns during battle and may be considered similar to a Warrant Officer.
