(x) The Order of the Tower and Sword awarded to Colonel Gilbert Hogg, sometime member of the British Legion and veteran of the First Carlist War, later Chief Constable of Wolverhampton Police
Portugal, Order of the Tower and Sword, Breast Badge, 33mm x 53mm including ring suspension, silver and enamels; portrait miniature, 37mm x 48mm, three-quarter length image of the recipient in Full-Dress uniform, wearing red coattee and several European decorations, the reverse featuring an old black-and-white photograph of a display relating to Hogg including some descriptive text regarding his military service; each frame 109mm x 122mm, Tower & Sword with damage to enamels and missing upper part of central wreath, otherwise generally good very fine
Gilbert Hogg appears to have served with some distinction in the First Carlist War (1833 - 1840) as a member of the British Legion, which operated in Spain in support of Queen Isabella II and the Liberal cause. In addition to the Order of the Tower and Sword, he was a recipient of the Royal and Military Order of St. Ferdinand of Spain.
In later life, Hogg was Chief Constable of Wolverhampton Borough Police (1848 - 1857) and died on 21 December 1867.
