Nederlandsche Overzee Trustmaatschappij Silver Medal 1914-1919, edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine

Sir Nathaniel Joseph Highmore was born at Sherborne, Dorset on 13 November 1844, the son of William Highmore M.P. Joining the Inland Revenue in 1864 he was Assistant Solicitor to the Inland Revenue by 1890. Later a solicitor for H.M. Customs and after that H.M. Excise Highmore was knighted in 1907 and retired in 1913, receiving the K.C.B. at the same time. With the outbreak of the First World War Highmore took a role as the representative of the Board of Customs and Excise on the Committee on Trading with the Enemy. Transferring from there in 1915 he served as Secretary and Assistant Director of the War Trade Department, retaining this role until March 1919 when the Department was abolished. He was awarded the G.B.E. as a result of his efforts on 30 March 1920; sold together with a letter of presentation for the medal addressed to Sir Nathaniel Highmore from The Hague and dated 27 February 1920.
