[A.F.C.] London Gazette 2 June 1943.

Joe Northrop was born on 11 November 1912. Joining as part of the 19th entry at R.A.F. Halton on 17 January 1919 with No. 4 Wing, he won the Londonderry Cup Medal for Junior Backstroke in 1930. Graduating with the rank of Aircraftman Class I he was Commissioned Pilot Officer (General Duties) on 1 April 1940 with the number 43138. Advanced Flying Officer (Wireless) on 1 April 1941 and Flight Lieutenant (Wireless) 1 April 1942 his technical skills proved immensely useful as this draft citation for the Air Force Cross makes clear, stating:

'This officer has been employed on radio counter measures work since its initial stages. He is a highly proficient pilot and navigator who has been a great asset to his present unit. During the past two years he has, for short periods, commanded detachments of his unit engaged on "Oboe" experimental work and A.1 4 E reconnaissance work. In all, Flight Lieutenant Northrop has flown 650 hours on radio counter measure work and his keenness and efficiency have proved to be an inspiration to the flight.'

Joining No. 83 Squadron with the rank of Flight Lieutenant he took command in July 1944 with the rank of Acting Wing Commander and was soon awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his work. Transferred to the Aircraft Control Branch on appointment with the rank of Squadron Leader (General Duties) on 20 March 1947. Finally promoted Wing Commander officially on 1 January 1952 he retired with that rank on 11 November 1959; sold together with a typed biography and R.A.F. Halton apprentice list.
