A Singapore prisoner, 'Burma work camp' casualty group of three awarded to Gunner P. Johnson, 5th Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery, who died a Prisoner of War at Saigon Camp on 11 February 1944

Patrick Johnson was born at Whitehaven, Cumberland on 19 September 1911, the son of Annie Johnson. Posted as a Gunner to 5th Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery on 9 July 1941, but was taken prisoner during the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942. He was noted as being kept at ‘Thai’ camp for some time but later moved to Saigon Camp. Here prisoners unloaded supplies from supply ships and carried them up river on rafts to supply the Japanese war effort. Johnson died here on 11 February 1944 of bronchitis and dysentery, he is buried at Kranji War Cemetry; sold together with copied research including P.O.W. records, Commonwealth War Graves details, Prisoner of War documents and pictures of the recipients grave as well as a number of original documents including letters and documents sent to the recipient’s family regarding his capture.
