Monica Rose Strickland was born on 26 August 1896, the daughter of William Strickland, who lived at Courtlandt, Hailsham. Her father was Managing Director & Chairman of the family merchants and lived between Sussex and Dublin. Young Strickland served with the British Red Cross from January 1915, nursing for five hours a day, she was also Commandant to Admiral Pelham at the Hailsham Red Cross Hospital as part of the Sussex Detachment. She was also on the Joint War Committee for Leinster, Munster & Connaught. Strickland was also prominent in the Hailsham Branch of the Primrose League and was responsible in the sending of a large number of bunches to be distributed amongst the soldiers in London in 1916 on Primrose Day.
Strickland was married to Captain T. S. Bowen in 1919 at home, with over 300 guests in attendance. Her husband was a colliery owner in south Wales and served the Royal Welsh Fusiliers during the Great War, being wounded at Ypres. The couple went off to live at 36 Landsdowne Crescent.
