James Stovin was born at Wandsworth and served in the 23rd Battalion, London Regiment on the Western Front from 14 March 1915. He was wounded on 26 May 1915 at Bethune and suffered gunshot wounds to his buttocks and in the left ankle, being Discharged with a Silver War Badge on account of his wounds on 13 September 1916. His British War and Victory Medals were returned under King's Regulation 1743 and were eventually re-issued to the recipient in the 1930's
