The 1914 Star awarded to Serjeant G. H. Ford who was present with the Worcestershire Regiment for the action at Gheluvelt, 31 October 1914, later killed by a German mine while working underground as part of 170th Tunnelling Company

George Henry Ford was born at Bristol in 1893, the son of George and Amelia Ford of 55 Berkeley Road, Bristol. Entering the war on 12 August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment as a Sergeant Ford will have been with the Regiment at their famous charge at Gheluvelt on 31 October 1914.Transfering later in the war to the 170th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers Ford was with this unit in August 1915. They were working underground when on 9 August the sounds of distant working was heard, preparing defensive measures the British continued to work and blew a charge with destroyed a German Gallery on 10 August. However they had underestimated the Germans and on 13 August an enemy mine was detonated with destroyed one British Gallery killing six men, one Officer, one N.C.O. and four Privates. Ford was the N.C.O. killed in the explosion.; sold together with copied M.I.C., Commonwealth War Graves details and War Diary extracts for the engagement at Gheluvelt and August 1915 as well as maps of the line detailing the location, photographs of the recipients grave and a Tunnellers Memorial unveiling booklet.
